Biography
Exploring the multi-dimensional reality in everyday life, Jayoung Choo deconstructs and transforms the common conception of cultural elements into artworks that interrogate the complex relationship between personal and collective identities, social norms, and rituals. Often working with minutiae of daily existence including the use of language and visual encounters, Choo draws inspiration from her everyday experiences living as a Korean diaspora within the broader community. Distinguished by this self-conscious and reflective process, her creations become catalysts for individuals to examine how they construct their identity in relation to others and for communities to address the challenges of building societies – where people live together-in-difference in the ever globalized world.
Born in Seoul and raised in Beijing, Choo is currently based in Hong Kong. She graduated from the Bachelor of Fine Art in RMIT University, with a primary focus on painting and installations. Prior to her studies in Fine Art, she worked as a Marketing and Public Relations professional and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Media and Cultural Studies from The University of Hong Kong.
